“You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” ― Martin Luther King Jr., August 4, 2012.

That quote and the fact that the pattern by Sarah Bond that inspired my quilt is named Diamond Stair Step caused me to name my quilt “Take the First Step”. The pattern makes a dramatic geometric presentation especially in high contrast red and white, my favorite color combination.

My friend Maxine Moore quilted “Take the First Step” on her long arm. She used a wavy pattern that is a perfect contrast to the straight lines of the quilt. The African border brings it all together in a striking work of art.

The fabric on the back of the quilt is a delicate floral pattern. There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display, and a label that documents the quilt. I signed it on the front.

“Take the First Step” is a reminder to step out on faith, as we say in the Baptist Church. Take that first step, and you will be able to get to your destination if you keep taking step after step.
