People born in unprivileged circumstances must resort to dreams and imagination to envision a better life. Growing up in the segregated south in a small town, I was such a person. “I Can See My Bright Future” attempts to capture the before and after of a young girl’s life.
“I Can See My Bright Future” is a quilted wallhanging that measures 34 x 38 inches. The left side of the quilt is representative of the before, and the right side shows the future that the young girl can imagine. She knows she must have courage to create a life that is so different from her present reality, but she is confident. She will have a successful career, wear high heels and spend fun time with her best girlfriends.
The quilt is pieced and quilted by me on my Janome sewing machine. It is embellished with words, buttons, cowrie shells, scrabble tiles and words.
The back of the quilt is a blue and brown African fabric. There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display, and a label that documents the quilt. I signed it near the “dream” charm although it is hard to see.
This quilt is one-of-a-kind.
I prefer Paypal or credit cards. I do not accept checks.
